About our Church

A brief history of growth

Fivehead Baptist Church began with a small group meeting in a house (Tudor Cottage next to the present church building) to study the Bible and worship God together.

It was founded in 1866 and constituted formally as a church in 1868. Its history has been long and varied, a low point being 1992 when membership fell to 7 and attendance to 10. Since then there has been steady growth and Fivehead Baptist Church today is a loving and lively fellowship with 33 members and a fellowship of around 70-80.

Objective

At Fivehead Baptist Church we try to devote ourselves to:

Prayer - Teaching - Fellowship - Worship - Outreach

Within the scriptures there are things which Jesus expects His disciples to ‘Be', and to ‘Do' to become healthy Christians and live as His followers. That's our objective!

Prayer

Prayer is based on God's love for believers; it offers them a means of acknowledging the character and purposes of God and the opportunity to seek guidance concerning His will for them.

Jesus commanded his disciples to pray (Luke 11:2-4). He explained that God always hears true prayer (Luke 11:9-13). Paul encouraged believers to pray unceasingly with all kinds of prayer (Eph 6:18).

Teaching

Teaching is one of the ways that God transforms believers into the likeness of His Son Jesus. It helps them grow in their knowledge and love of God.

A vital part of Jesus' ministry was His teaching and preaching. Jesus taught, "If anyone loves me, they will obey my teaching. My father will love them, and we will come to them, and make our home with them" (John 14:23).

Fellowship

Fellowship is an expression of the love and grace of God, which we have all received. We believe that God has called us together to be committed not only to Him, but also to one another as His people, the Church. We need to do more than believe - we need to belong.

Jesus taught that the Church would be a mediator of God's love (Matt 25:37-40 & Lk 6:35), a transforming agent in a world of great need (Matt 5:13-16).

Worship

Worship lies at the very heart of the believer's life, and is so much more than an hour or two on a Sunday. Our worship is about all of our lives, offered to God as a pleasing sacrifice (Heb 13:15).

Jesus taught, "Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only" (Matt 4:10). To worship God is to, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment" (Matt 22:37).

Outreach

Outreach, like worship, is a fundamental part of the Christian life. We worship the missionary God who has come to us. And, as He has come to us, so He calls upon us to go to others sharing the good news about Jesus, and His Father's Kingdom.

Jesus said, "Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you" (Matt 28:19).
